Just don’t forget to use reef-safe sunscreen on any exposed areas, like your face and neck! If you’re spending all day at the beach, UV shirts, sun hats, and umbrellas offer better protection than any sunscreen could. If your unsure of which sunscreen to purchase, or just looking to avoid a sunburn at all costs, the best choice for your body and the reef is to cover up. Taking the time to read the ingredients can make or break your effort to keep Hawaii’s reefs healthy. Sadly, some brands market their product as “reef-safe” or “reef-friendly”, yet still contain harmful chemicals. Don’t trust the packaging, read the ingredients: It sounds like a lot to remember, but the golden rule is to make sure that none of these chemicals are listed under “active ingredients”, and look for non-nano zinc or titanium instead. However, homosalate, octocrylene, octisalate, and avobenzone are all common sunscreen ingredients that are known to damage coral reefs as well. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are the two worst offenders and will be outlawed in Hawaii by January 2021. Grab some Raw Love Sunscreen or look at the other options below. Chemicals in sunscreen are also absorbed by your skin and have been linked to an array of health problems. Mineral sunscreens work to reflect UV rays, whereas chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays. Non-nano means the minerals contain no heavy metals that could otherwise settle on the reef and cause damage. Non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the safest sunscreen ingredients for both your body and the reef. We only share companies we believe in, so you can trust our recommendations. How do you know what to look for, and where can you find it here on Maui? Here are some tips to guide you in keeping Hawaii’s reefs healthy. Using reef-safe products is the easiest way to help keep Hawaii’s reefs healthy. In today’s world, reef-safe sunscreen is a term every beachgoer should know. To combat this, starting in January 2021, Hawaii has outlawed the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate– two chemicals known to make corals more susceptible to bleaching and even be lethal to young coral polyps. Some types of sunscreen can do some serious damage to young corals. Both of these recoveries have a surprising common denominator- the absence of harmful sunscreens. Over on Oahu, researchers were stunned at how marine life responded to zero human activity at Hanauma Bay during the covid-19 shutdown. Kona’s reefs have begun to recover from a major bleaching event in which 50% of corals were lost. However, scientists have noted that with proper care, coral reefs around the world can make a promising comeback. Coral reefs around Hawaii have never been more in jeopardy than today. In recent years, Hawaii’s reefs have faced innumerable calamities- bleaching events, pollution problems that have been ignored, and ocean acidification. I don’t think the planning departments are rigorous enough in the compliance checking so it’s best not to allow new construction on that scale right now. You can submit testimony right now! Every new construction should take into account our reefs, landscape, and community impact. I bring it up because the bill was passed by the county council, then the mayor vetoed the bill… and today, 01/07/22, at 9am the council discussing overturning the veto in a virtual call. In my mind, fewer tourists = less damage to our reefs. putting a pause on building new hotels on Maui. 148 (2021), Draft 1 (“Bill”), establishing Chapter 19.98 Maui County Code, declaring a moratorium on new transient accommodations on Maui. This bill (Bill 135) was introduced by Kelly King (we love her!) Ordinance 5306 was signed into law on December 6th, 2021.

I do not know which third of the student body of Vanderbilt is here today, but I am confident we are talking to the future rulers of Tennessee and America in the spirit of this university. Nearly 100 years ago Prince Bismarck said that one-third of the students of German universities broke down from overwork, another third broke down from dissipation, and the other third ruled Germany. We live in an age of movement and change, both evolutionary and revolutionary, both good and evil-and in such an age a university has a special obligation to hold fast to the best of the past and move fast to the best of the future. If there is one unchanging theme that runs throughout these separate stories, it is that everything changes but change itself. Percy Priest, a former colleague of mine in the House of Representatives, who represented this district, this State, and this Nation in the Congress for 16 turbulent years-years which witnessed the crumbling of empires, the splitting of the atom, the conquest of one threat to freedom, and the emergence of still another. We are saluting-by initiating construction of a dam in his name-a great Tennessee statesman, Cordell Hull, the father of reciprocal trade, the grandfather of the United Nations, the Secretary of State who presided over the transformation of this Nation from a life of isolation and almost indifference to a state of responsible world leadership.Īnd finally, we are saluting-by the recognition of a forthcoming dam in his name-J. We are saluting the 90th anniversary of Vanderbilt University, which has grown from a small Tennessee university and institution to one of our Nation's greatest, with 7 different colleges, and with more than half of its 4200 students from outside of the State of Tennessee.Īnd we are saluting the 30th anniversary of the Tennessee Valley Authority, which transformed a parched, depressed, and floodravaged region into a fertile, productive center of industry, science, and agriculture. We are glad they are here with us, and we feel the musical future of this city and State is assured. I first of all want to express my warm appreciation to the Governor and to the Mayor of this State and city and to the people for a very generous welcome, and particularly to all those young men and women who lined the street and played music for us as we drove into this stadium. Jenna Angela, I want to share one of my favorite fun facts about Kent as we say goodbye to him. And I'm going to share a few of our emails later in this episode. And he was so great to us on The Office and he's been so great to us on Office Ladies. And if I could share anything with you guys is the kindness and the thoughtfulness that this man had for every member of the cast and making the show the best it could be. This was like towards the end of my pregnancy and he and I were having to schedule a lot of things around my OBGYN appointments and everything. Jenna in anticipation of this being his last episode, I went through and found all of these emails during this week that I traded with Kent. Angela Well, I think he's beat me, but I just love him. Kent-a-pedia is giving you a run for your money, Angela. You guys, we were so lucky to have him for four seasons, and Office Ladies has been so lucky that he saved like everything. He is an amazing, amazing production manager. After this he moved on and he became the producer and production manager for Anger Management, Dear White People, and most recently The Connors. This was the end of his run on The Office. OK, fast fact number two, I'm kind of sad. Angela Well, these were like giant sleeping bags. Jenna Because that's how they knew whose coat belonged to who. And on the label on the inside of a coat, it says Pam written in Sharpie. Also in between takes, do you remember our wardrobe department had these big puffy coats like the kind that go down to your ankles, giant puffy coats and they would bring them out to us so that we could put them on in between takes outside when we were cold. Angela Also, whenever they didn't see our feet, we had UGGS on and Jenna, I have an UGG catch later in this episode. And, you know, when you go skiing and you put those toe warmers in your ski boots, I had those in my shoes for the night shoot. Jenna I remember I had hand warmers in my pockets at night. It was very hot during the day and then at night it got cold. Jenna Here's what I remember about those party scenes, Angela. The Ferris wheel came from a company called Awesome Events, and it cost us seventy five hundred dollars to rent that Ferris wheel for three days. He said it took one full day to set it up and two days and nights to film. How many days did it take to film Toby's goodbye party? How long did it take to set it up? Well, you know I went to Kent-a-Pedia. Angela Are you going to give me a breakdown of all the party? Fast fact number one, I'm calling this party time. Jim plans to propose to Pam, but gets upstaged by Andy, and Phyllis discovers a secret. Jenna An extravagant goodbye party is being thrown in the parking lot for Toby. Here is a summary of part two of Goodbye, Toby. Jenna He sure is, guys it's season four, episode 19, written by Jen Celotta and Paul Lieberstein, directed by Paul Feig. Angela Michael is going to give him a big sendoff, lady. Jenna It's a long goodbye, but he deserves it. All right, everybody, we are still saying goodbye to Toby, Angela Each week we will break down an episode of The Office and give exclusive behind the scenes stories that only two people who were there can tell you. Jenna And now we're doing the ultimate Office rewatch podcast just for you.
